JACKSON, Miss. –– The Jackson State football team reached the midway point of spring practice with a Saturday morning scrimmage at the Walter Payton Center.

All facets of the team made plays during the hour-plus-long scrimmage, which included red zone, goal-to-go, and special teams situations.

“For the most part, I saw some good things on both sides of the ball,” said Jackson State Head Coach T.C. Taylor. “The defense was flying around making plays, and created a turnover. The offense executed well.  We’ve got some great guys at the skill positions, and all the quarterbacks threw the ball well. It was good to see Rico Powers make a big play, and Seven McGee step up and make some plays today.”

Among the points of emphasis in spring practice is tempo – playing fast and under control. Today’s scrimmage had an officiating crew making calls to give the practice more of a game-like feel.

“We can always play faster on both sides of the ball,” Taylor said. “This was the first actual day to have referees out here, and that affects the tempo.  The players were able to see the tempo of the game with referees out there. They moved at a good tempo, moving pretty fast, but we can always be faster.”

The Tigers will conclude spring practice with the Blue and White Game on Saturday, April 15 at 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with additional opportunities for playmakers to emerge over the next two weeks.

“We’re at that halfway point. That’s what I told the players in the team meeting this morning,” Taylor said. “Guys have two more weeks to come out and show us what they can do. The players we were counting on are making plays, but we want a few more guys to step up and take advantage of the next two weeks leading up to the spring game.”
