DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman made a statement Saturday afternoon, dominating Southern University 45-14 in SWAC action at Daytona Stadium. Quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom led the charge with 254 passing yards, two touchdowns through the air, and another on the ground to guide the Wildcats (3-4, 2-1 SWAC) to a blowout win on their home turf.
Southern (1-5, 0-2 SWAC) struck early with a bang, as Cam’Ron McCoy connected with Darren Morris for a 71-yard touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. But that was about as good as it got for the Jaguars.
Bethune-Cookman answered quickly with an 83-yard drive, capped by Ransom’s 13-yard keeper to even the score at 7-7 late in the first quarter. From there, it was all Wildcats.
Freshman running back Rashon Brown scored his first collegiate touchdown early in the second quarter, giving B-CU a 14-7 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Ransom stayed hot, hitting Rickie Shaw II for another score to extend the lead to 21-7.
Bethune-Cookman kept piling it on in the second half. After Ali Scott Jr. punched it in from two yards out, a Southern fumble on a risky 4th-down call gave the Wildcats excellent field position. Juan Dominguez nailed a 32-yard field goal to make it 31-7, and Ransom added another highlight reel moment with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Lorenzo Jenkins.
Southern added a late score behind backup quarterback Ashton Strother, who found Kobe Brown for a 14-yard touchdown, but B-CU wasn’t done. With Timmy McClain now under center, freshman Juan Rodriguez broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown run — his first in a Wildcats uniform — to seal the 45-14 final.
Stat Leaders:
- B-CU QB Cam’Ron Ransom: 254 passing yards, 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD
- RB Rashon Brown: 65 rushing yards, 1 TD (in his college debut)
- WR Malek Huggins: 8 receptions, 92 yards
- Defense: Stephen Sparrow led the Wildcats with 6 tackles
For Southern, Trey Holly managed 71 yards on the ground, while Strother impressed off the bench, going 9-of-13 for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Bethune-Cookman now turns its attention to Homecoming 2K25, hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m.
